You Can't Take It with You is a comedy about the importance of living life on your own terms. The story centres on the free-spirited Sycamore family, whose quirky hobbies and unconventional lifestyle are challenged when their daughter, Alice, falls in love with Tony Kirby, the son of a wealthy businessman. When the two families meet, their vastly different values lead to hilarious misunderstandings and chaos. In the end, the play celebrates individuality, love, and the idea that true wealth comes from enjoying life rather than chasing money and status.

Grandpa Older male A man who has made peace with the world, fairly youthful, the family revolves around him
Penny Sycamore Female 40 - 55 Gentle, homely, placid but driven to write Plays. Married to Paul
Paul Sycamore Male 40 - 55 Quiet charm, engaging personality, driven to create fireworks
Essie Carmichael Female 18 - 30 Daughter of Penny & Paul. Wife of Ed. Almost pixie-like, innocent, always happy, driven to do ballet – right through the show.
Ed Carmichael Male 18 - 30 Friendly, innocent charm, always happy, driven to play the xylophone and use his printing machine
Alice Sycamore Female 18 - 30 Daughter of Penny & Paul. In love with Tony Kirby. Lovely young woman, gentle but gets anxious. The only normal one in her family but she loves them dearly.
Mr de Pinna Male 40 - 60 Friend of Paul who lives with the family. Helpful, industrious, friendly, driven to create fireworks with Paul. A good comedy role.
Rheba Female - any age The family maid, loves Donald. Part of the family. Could be rotund and jolly.
Donald Male – must match Rheba’s age On the benefit so helps the family and Rheba with jobs.
Boris Kolenkhof Male - over 35 Very large, loud Russian with Russian accent. Male ballet teacher for Essie. Some nimble footwork required. Friend of the family. Good comedy role
Tony Kirby Male 20 - 35 Loves Alice - she works for his dad -the boss of Kirby & Co. Educated, personable, very nice young man, an idealist.
Mr Kirby Male - over 50 Snooty, very proper, self- righteous, carries authority. Owner of Kirby & Co. Driven by money.
Mrs Kirby Female - over 45 Highly strung, not good with surprises, very proper, into spiritualism. Good comedy role.
Gay Wellington Female – any age Must be good at acting drunk. Small comedy role.
Duchess Olga Female – over 40 Was of Russian aristocracy, strong Russian temperament, loud, large and confident. Small comedy role
Three FBI men/Mr Henderson Male or female –any age Competent, official, carry authority. Small roles
